I love cheese, but cheese does not love me. I was thrilled when I first discovered the raw vegan alternative to dairy cheese. It gave me access to that cheesy flavour without the nausea and spots that plagued my previously dairy-fuelled life. If only I’d known I just needed to cut out dairy when I was an acned teenager!
It’s estimated that 80% of the Western World is dairy intolerant. Common indicators of diary intolerance include bloating, gas, skin conditions (including eczema), stomach cramps, nausea, and constipation or diarrhoea. If you’re not sure if you are, try cutting it out for two weeks and see how you feel.
Dairy-Free Cheese
Since I discovered raw vegan ‘cheese’ I’ve been doing all kinds of recipe experiments with it. I have to admit that I generally can’t be bothered with the fussiness of making fermented nut cheeses. I find the fresh kind just as delicious and they are ready to use straight away. (If you haven’t heard of fermented nut cheese, it’s quite fiddly to make and usually takes around 24 hours before you can eat it).
I love today’s superfood hemp cheese recipe. Like most of my recipes, it’s super quick and easy to make, and I’ve combined the classic cheese and onion flavour in the sandwich along with the lovely freshness of alfalfa sprouts and tomatoes.
If you don’t have alfalfa, use cucumber slices or shredded lettuce instead. You can use your favourite healthy bread or go gluten-free with raw crackers. Wrap your sandwiches up in waxed paper or cling film for a yummy workday or picnic lunch.
Enjoy!

Hi Saskia,it looks like a great recipe. Is hulled the same as shelled? I use shelled hemp seeds for recipes. Hope this isn’t a stupid question?
Thanks and best wishes,
Louise

Hi Louise,
Thanks for your question – no question is a stupid question in my eyes 🙂 Shelled and hulled hemp seeds are the same thing.
Enjoy!
